Frequently Asked Questions
Non-profit agencies are typically ready to be competitive in pursuing grants after they have been operating as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit agency for a few years, have raised local, grassroots funding and are on a growing trend. Seed money for establishing non-profit agencies is very rare and most funders want to see a track record of service and tax returns before investing with your agency.
There is no such thing as “free money.” That being said, there is general operating support which is unrestricted cash support for an agency to allocate as they see fit. The condition of that support is based on an agreement between the agency and the funder as a result of the general operation of the non-profit agency. Rarely do new non-profits without any track record successfully compete for these funds.

Businesses are eligible for certain types of grants for specific business purposes. For example, a woman owned business may be eligible for a capacity building grant to help build her business’s ability to compete within an industry. Another example might be a grant for farmers within a farming cooperative to provide marketing for a specific crop, to increase sales and awareness. Grants are not available as revenue for businesses.
